What to book ahead

  • The newly completed Guadalajara–Puerto Vallarta short-route highway (Vía Corta) cuts bus and driving time from 5 hours down to ~2 hours 45 minutes.
  • Book small-batch tequila distillery tours in Tequila town (such as Fortaleza or Cascahuin) at least 3–6 weeks ahead.
  • At PVR Airport, walk across the pedestrian highway bridge outside the terminal to board local buses ($10 MXN) or catch Uber at standard town rates.

Ways to adapt this route

  • Swap a midday museum visit for a traditional Mercado Municipal food tour and Comida Corrida lunch
  • Add a Pueblo Mágico half-day excursion (such as Cholula, Izamal, Tepoztlán, Tlaquepaque, or Todos Santos)
