Overview
Guanajuato City (Guanajuato) is one of Mexico's most rewarding destinations: A kaleidoscope of brightly painted hillside houses, subterranean stone road tunnels (Calle Subterránea), romantic pedestrian alleys (Callejón del Beso), the opulent Teatro Juárez, and rich 16th-century silver-mining heritage.
Getting here and moving around is straightforward: Bajío International Airport (BJX, 30 km west): uneven taxi ($450–$550 MXN) or Uber; or Primera Plus / ETN direct buses from Mexico City Terminal Norte (4.5 hrs, $680 MXN), San Miguel de Allende (1 hr 15 min, $165 MXN), and Guadalajara (3.5 hrs, $560 MXN). Once in town, rely on 100% pedestrian exploration across plazas, stairways, and alleys; Funicular Panorámico behind Teatro Juárez ($35 MXN one-way / $70 MXN round-trip) up to El Pípila monument.

Best time to visit
The most pleasant months to visit Guanajuato City are October–May (Festival Internacional Cervantino in October), when dry skies and comfortable daytime temperatures make walking archaeological zones and colonial plazas ideal. Book ADO Platino / ETN buses, Tren Maya tickets, and timed museum entries ahead during winter holidays and Día de Muertos.
Local tips
- Booking a hillside hotel or Airbnb on a 'Callejón' with wheeled suitcases—cars cannot enter Guanajuato's stepped alleys; book on a flat plaza or hire a local maletero.
- Waiting in a 45-minute paid photo line on the steps of Callejón del Beso at midday—walk through free at 08:00 AM before the queues form.
- Confusing Guanajuato Central de Autobuses (located 6 km southwest of Centro) with the historic downtown—take the $10 MXN 'Centro' bus or a $100 MXN taxi through the tunnels.
